Amsterdam: The Eats & Drinks

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love food. I’m very food motivated, so when my husband and I visited Amsterdam my first thought was “where do we eat?” Amsterdam was the first stop on our trip and we didn’t have much time there so we had to be strategic. We googled suggestions and narrowed down our choices – no easy task! Below is a list of the spots we hit up for food and drinks. Above are some photos I took along the way. As a true food lover, sometimes I eat before I shoot, so I apologize for not capturing all the places. Trust me, these restaurants/bars are good. I made myself hungry while writing this post.

CASA PERU

Exhausted from a nine hour flight, we made the mistake of taking a nap. That nap lasted four hours, so we lost a huge chunk of sightseeing time. Luckily, that set us up for an early dinner and a chance to eat our feelings at Casa Peru. Run by Peruvians, this was a little taste of home cooking for me. If you decide to check it out, order the Tallarines Verdes or Aji de Gallina. They won’t disappoint you!

LITTLE COLLINS

After a late night of exploring the Red Light District, we thought we deserved some rest. We took the morning easy and caught a late brunch at Little Collins to help fight the jet lag. This De Pijp spot has a delicious Avocado Toast to beat all others. Topped with a poached egg and fennel sausage, I still dream of this brunch. Luckily I took a picture so I can try to recreate it.

BAZAR

When in Amsterdam, prepare yourself for tons of walking. It’s the perfect way to balance out all the food you eat. On one of these walks, we stumbled upon Bazar. Housed in a former church, Bazar is THE place to try Middle Eastern and African food. The Hummus is a must and I was more than happy with my order of Dolme. Be adventurous, you can’t go wrong with any order here.

GOLLEM BEER CAFE

Who doesn’t enjoy a nightcap or two before bed? Especially when you’re on vacation and there’s no work the next day! If cosy bars and long beer lists are your thing, you’ll fit right in at Gollem. The beer selection is overwhelming, but Gollem’s bartenders are champs. They provided us awesome recommendations based on our preferences.

A real beer favourite of mine is a Kriek lambic. These Belgian beers use wild yeast and sour cherries to create a taste that is not for everyone. As soon as we stepped down in Europe, it was my number one craving! I googled where to get a sour beer stat and Gollem was at the top of that list. After visiting, I couldn’t argue with that!
I have this thing for Belgian beers, so keep your eyes peeled for my future Belgium post. 😉

BARCA

We didn’t have time to visit Spain, but we made up for it by getting Spanish cuisine on our last night.  Barca boasts a delicious selection of tapas sure to make your mouth water. We ordered Pimientos de Padron (deep fried green peppers), Calamares, Albondigas (meatballs) and Chicken in Yogurt Sauce. Don’t forget to pair your orders with a healthy helping of Sangria!

Now that you’re well fed and have energy, hit up the popular Amsterdam attractions! Need a place to start? Check out my recommendations from last week!
