Living Room Makeover
After living outside of our apartment for a year and half, we FINALLY returned home this past June. Slowly but surely, our home is taking shape and with that came some upgrades – yay! Much like fashion, I believe your home is a reflection of your personal style and the chance to shape that from scratch doesn’t come around too often. And let me tell you, it’s not easy to execute either.
You see, by the time I moved in with my husband (then boyfriend), he had already lived there for 2-3 years and bought all the furniture. He asked my opinion on certain pieces, but ultimately it was his place at the time and he had the final say. When I moved in, we kept the same pieces because they were relatively new and functional. However, it was a little hard to feel like my style was fully represented. Sure there were “hints of me” in little knick knacks and throw pillows, but they were whispers (dramatic, I know). As anyone will tell you, furnishing a home can be costly and it takes a lot of time and investment. Let’s just say I wasn’t up to the task back then.
BEFORE:
So a fire and a wedding later, we have the chance to decorate our place to cater to both our styles. Finding a common ground is hard stuff, but we’re getting there. While both our couches were comfy as hell, we agreed we needed something that fit our L-shaped corner living room better. A sectional was a no brainer, but which one? We (err…me) struggled to agree on this for at least a month. I really wanted a dreamy caramel coloured leather couch, but those cost an arm, leg and your first born, so it just wasn’t in the cards for us this time. Next, I fell in love with the idea of a dark blue velvet couch, but the upkeep with dust on that thing and sticky fingers (we have a 3 year old nephew) made me cringe.
After many weekends of furniture hunting, I remembered I followed Liquidation Furniture on Instagram awhile back. My husband was a little spent, so I made the trip to Richmond to see what they had in store. I was probably there for 5 minutes when I ran into the couch that was meant for our living room. My husband loved the photos, it fit our dimensions perfectly and it was the right price with an extra 15% off when you shared a photo and checked in on Facebook. The universe delivered big time. VOILA!
A WORK IN PROGRESS
So much better! We’re still in the process of solidifying our unified style (Modern Boho? West Coast Modern? Industrial? Urban Modern? – that’s a whole different blog post), but the neutral grey of our couch still gives us possibilities to work with. I’ll keep you posted on how the rest of our home develops.
